Description
A photo of the Read Family including; Clive, Bernie, Arthur, David, Walter and Ilsa, 1950.
In 1952, Ilse Read compiled the "History of Dunster" to enter into the Tweedsmuir competition of local histories. She, and her colleagues in the Dunster Women's Institute, founded in 1944, wrote from local oral accounts - including both first and second hand stories. The book includes many photographs and stories that, without the foresight these women showed in protecting them, would surely have been lost through time. The original book, with its hand embroidered cover and original photographs, has remained with Ilse's family and is currently safe-guarded by her daughter-in-law, Sally Read. Copies of the book have been made though, and can be found throughout the community, including one copy held by the Dunster Station Museum.
